What is a Pillar of Justice?

A Pillar of Justice nominee is an individual who has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to advancing justice, equity, and human rights in their community. These nominees are often individuals who have had a profound impact on issue areas that align with Appleseed’s mission, such as civil rights, immigrant justice, educational equity, and access to essential services.

While many nominees are lawyers who have offered critical pro bono services, the Pillar of Justice Award is not limited to legal achievements. Nominees may also be advocates, community leaders, or supporters who have contributed significantly to advancing an important cause—whether through legal efforts, impactful advocacy, or even supporting pivotal research initiatives.

The defining quality of a Pillar of Justice nominee is their dedication to the belief that meaningful change can be achieved through action. Their contributions—whether in courtrooms, communities, boardrooms, or research settings—are what make them champions of justice and equity. We celebrate those who stand up, take action, and inspire others to do the same, embodying the values that Appleseed fights for every day.
