Reginald Dwayne Betts is a poet, lawyer, and the Founder & CEO of Freedom Reads, a transformative initiative that has opened over 600 libraries in 60 adult and youth prisons across 15 states. In 2019, he won the National Magazine Award for his New York Times Magazine essay, Getting Out, that chronicles his journey from prison to becoming a Yale Law School graduate and a licensed attorney. He was named a 2021 MacArthur Fellow, and he has been awarded fellowships from the National Endowment of the Arts, the Guggenheim Foundation, and other leading institutions.
