Steven Schulman is a partner at Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP, where he leads the firm’s pro bono practice. Under Steven’s leadership, Akin has built strong relationships with local and national legal services organizations, and the firm’s lawyers each now devote on average more than 100 hours each year to pro bono service. Steven’s own pro bono work has included leading a team in the first case to bring a former head of state (Bolivia) to trial in the United States for human rights abuses; securing asylum grants for academics and activists from Syria, Malaysia, Iraq, Ethiopia, Turkey, Iran, Iraq, Sri Lanka, Nigeria, Afghanistan, Central African Republic and El Salvador; and organizing a multi-firm project in London to represent stateless persons seeking immigration status in the United Kingdom.
Steven has co-authored several Appleseed reports focused on the U.S. immigration system, and he also served as the Co-Chair of the Appleseed Network and on the inaugural board of Oklahoma Appleseed.
